In the first centuries after the beginning of the Common Era, when the Roman Empire extended far to the north, a Goddess reigned on the western mainland coast of the North Sea, appreciated and worshiped by Romans, Celts and Germanic peoples.
However, she is not mentioned in any written sources from that time. Only in the year 1647 does her name appear, Nehalennia, carved in stone. And not just one, no, many votive altars dedicated to her have been found.
This book tells of these finds, describes in words and pictures a rich selection of these votive stones, and then paints a comprehensive picture of life at that time, placing the cult of Nehalennia in its background; her land, her meaning, her worshipers, and the related backgrounds are placed in a possible historical context.
A Goddess without mythology, but with a fascinating history!
The chapter “Nehalennia Today” shows that this Goddess is alive today in various ways in the hearts and minds of many different people.
